The New Food Waste Marketplace: Where You Can Buy Surplus Food and Stop the Waste
With the existing food supply framework that is operating within Australia, it means that approximately 9.5 million tonnes of food is discarded annually; 3.9 million tonnes of which belongs to the commercial food sector.
It is also estimated that around 500,000 tonnes of wasted food is high quality and is edible. We can also think of food waste from a different angle where it is not just food that we’re wasting, but the water and supplies that are used in the process of producing those foods.
The Yume Story
Yume was founded by food rescue veteran Katy Barfield in 2014 and it is her mission to create a world without food waste by facilitating the sale and donation of surplus food that may have otherwise been discarded. The organisation has been named a winner in 3 categories of the Victorian Premier’s Sustainability Awards for developing Australia’s first commercial online marketplace for quality surplus food.
How Does Yume Work?
Yume is basically an online marketplace that connects food suppliers with buyers, enabling these food suppliers to list out the surplus products at a discount. Buyers may include industrial caterers, wholesalers, manufacturers, hotels, and many more.
A Supplier Has Surplus Food
There may be a variety of reasons why some food may be considered as surplus in the eyes of food suppliers. For instance, a supplier may cancel or placed an incorrect order and this will leave food manufacturers with tonnes of surplus food.
2. The Supplier’s Surplus Food Products are Added to the Yume Platform
If there is surplus food among the suppliers, then the suppliers would provide product details and information to Yume, which is then uploaded to the marketplace and is made available to buyers.
3. Buyer Can Choose from a Variety of Discounted Supplies
Buyers can sort products by category, price, best before date, deal size, and even receive notifications about new products. Products are sold at a minimum of 20% below regular wholesale prices.
Whether you’re a food supplier or food buyer, please don’t hesitate to visit Yume to not only serve a great cause, but also save some money as a buyer as well!
