Choosing Ethical Poultry
Poultry, particularly chicken, has had an ethical spotlight on its production over the last ten years. Animal welfare standards have been developed to ensure poultry are managed well and produced in humane conditions.
Things to Know
Space to animal ratio: There are a variety of different standards, however the Humane Choice standards are for no less than 1 square meter for every five birds and the RSPCA standards state that stocking density must not exceed 28kg per 1 square meter.
Environment: Ethically produced poultry should have access to indoor and outdoor areas including natural lighting. Their environments should encourage activity and movement.
Feed: Animals produced ethically should always have access to unrestricted feed.
